routeTour Itinerary (10 stops)

40 min

Pick Up and Transfer to Lexington

Your guide will pick you up in a comfortable minivan and drive you out to Lexington!

30 min

Lexington Battle Green

Stand where 80 colonial militiamen faced 700 British regulars on April 19, 1775. Eight Americans died here in under 30 minutes - the first casualties of the Revolution. The flag flies here 24/7 by order of Congress, one of only seven such sites in America.

20 min

Buckman Tavern

Step inside the tavern where the Lexington militia gathered in the pre-dawn hours of April 19, 1775. See the original door still bearing a musket ball hole from that fateful morning, and stand in the Tap Room where Captain John Parker's men waited for the British to arrive.

Paul Revere Capture Site

Discover the truth behind the famous midnight ride! Paul Revere was actually captured here by a British patrol and never made it to Concord. The real hero? Samuel Prescott, a local doctor who escaped and completed the warning. Your guide separates myth from fact!

25 min

Old North Bridge

Stand where "the shot heard around the world" was fired! Walk across the reconstructed Old North Bridge where 450 colonial militia faced down 90 British soldiers on April 19, 1775. Major Buttrick's command - "Fire, fellow soldiers, for God's sake fire!" - marked the moment Americans first fought back in military order.

Break

Take a break for lunch at the Old Colonial Inn, built in 1716!

25 min

Sleepy Hollow Cemetery

Climb Author's Ridge, where America's greatest literary minds rest side by side: Thoreau, Emerson, Alcott, and Hawthorne. Join the unique tradition of leaving pencils (not flowers!) on their graves as tribute to their written legacies.

1 hour

Alcott's Orchard House

Tour the Orchard House, home to Louisa May Alcott and her family. See the desk on which Little Women was written and where the Alcott sisters put on plays for their friends and neighbors.

15 min

Walden Pond

End your day at Walden Pond, where Thoreau famously lived for "two years, two months, and two days" to "live deliberately." Visit the replica cabin and walk to the glacial pond that inspired one of America's most influential books.

Stand on Lexington Battle Green and listen to stories about the very first days of the war and the subsequent historical events which are still relevant to us today. Fall back in time with visits to restored houses and taverns to see how the Minutemen lived. Walk the Battle Road Trail, site of multiple skirmishes and other "treasonous" events. Visit the Old North Bridge in Concord, where the Minutemen turned back the British Redcoats! Free time for lunch in historic Concord downtown with excellent local food options!

The second half of the day includes a tour of the literary history in Concord. Tour the Louisa May Alcott Orchard House where Little Women was written. Visit the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery's famous Author's Ridge. See Walden Pond and Thoreau's Cabin!

help Frequently Asked Questions

Do we go inside any buildings?

Yes! Entrance to Buckman Tavern and the Orchard House is included. Buckman Tavern is where the Minutemen gathered before the first battle, and the Orchard House is where Louisa May Alcott wrote Little Women. Both offer fascinating guided tours that bring history to life.

Is this tour suitable for children?

Yes! Children of all ages are welcome on this tour. The mix of Revolutionary War history and literary sites keeps both kids and adults engaged. Note that Massachusetts law requires proper car seats for children under 8 years old or under 57 inches tall, and we do not provide car seats.

Please note: We cannot guarantee wheelchair or stroller accessibility of any buildings, and we do not recommend this tour if such access is required.

What if it rains?

Tours run rain or shine. Since this is primarily a driving tour with stops, you'll have shelter in the vehicle between locations. We recommend bringing an umbrella and wearing comfortable, weather-appropriate walking shoes for the outdoor portions at Battle Green, North Bridge, and Walden Pond.

Where is a good place for lunch?

We recommend the Colonial Inn, a historic tavern built in 1716 right in downtown Concord. Your guide can also suggest other local favorites based on your preferences. The one-hour lunch break gives you plenty of time to relax and explore Concord center.

Can I add Boston sites to this tour?

Absolutely! Check out our Lexington, Concord, & Boston Private Day Trip which combines Revolutionary sites in all three locations, including the Old North Church and Paul Revere's House. We can also customize any tour to your interests.
